Street Lights Off - Starlight On
If all local councils around the country turned off street lights from midnight - the energy savings would be enormous - not only would we save millions of dollars but we would all have a fantastic night sky to behold.
Imagine being snuggled up under a warm blanket with a close friend or family member under a night sky full of starlight. Our roadways and backyards would be lit by the glow of our Milky Way Galaxy instead of ugly and wasteful street lighting. Perfect!

Would be alright on a clear night but we haven't had many of them lately. The street lighting is controlled by the power boards soless lighting equals less money for them. Probably why they leave them on half the day sometimes.
Good point - however you would be surprised at how much one can see just by being dark adapted - even under cloudy skies
If councils/ Powerboards or the public are worried about turning off street lighting - a very easy fix would be to fit light shields or proper cut-off fixtures to each pole which of course directs the light where it is needed instead of lighting the night sky. Then, drop the wattage of each lamp - thus saving many many thousands of dollars while saving energy, protecting the environment and making it safer for us all.
Two great examples of what can be done with proper cut off fixtures and careful sensible thinking from those who actually care about saving energy, money and those living around them
